90% of search engine users pick a result from the first page of the results, so it is said that the true competition for a keyword are the sites that appear in positions 1 – 10 for that particular keyword or phrase.
To determine the true competition for your keywords, do a Google search of them and see where you rank in comparison to the top 10 results. If you’re already there, then great. If not, you need to start looking at how they have attained that position. How often do they post content? How socially active are they? How much content is on their website? How many backlinks do they have?
Answering these questions will give you an idea of what you need to do to hit page one and tell you the true competition of all your keywords. Carrying out this piece of work will also help you identify less competitive yet still relevant keywords that you might want to target instead for a quicker route to page one.
