What is a Site Wide Link?

A site wide link is a link that appears on every page of a website. Site wide linking had previously been used as a black hat SEO technique in the days when the quantity of links is what mattered most to Google’s algorithm. This is because if you had a link to your blog on every page, and you had 100 pages on your site, you’d gain 100 links for your blog. Naturally, it didn’t take too long for this technique to be abused.

However, site wide linking may be necessary on your website, for example if you have a particular policy that you have to make available to everyone. A site wide link is only considered such of the anchor text is always the same. For example, if every page of your website had a column featuring “Clients,” and it was the same on each page, these would be site wide links.

Depending on the context in which they are used, site wide links aren’t always seen as a bad thing, such as in the example given above. However, if you have a site wide link pointing out to one site, and that same site has a site wide link pointing at your site, it is likely to be seen as a link exchange. When choosing a hosting company or working with a web designer, be wary of them putting site wide links onto your pages that point to their own website, as this can damage you as much as it does them.
